Two standard heights are commonly used for measuring open wind speed. In fire management applications in the United States, open wind speed is measured 20 ft above the surrounding vegetation (20-ft wind speed); in most other parts of the world, open wind speed is measured ten meters (33 ft) above vegetation (ten-meter wind speed).
