Basal area

n. The cross-sectional area of all stems in a stand per unit of ground area (Helms 1998).

  • Discussion

Basal area is a measure of stand density and is often correlated with other stand characteristics, such as productivity or canopy fuel characteristics. The cross-sectional area of a stem is calculated at breast height, which is defined as 4.5 ft (1.37 m) above ground level.
