Burnout (noun)

n. A fire set inside a control line meant to consume fuel between the edge of the fire and the control line (NWCG 2005).

A burnout is simply the result of the act of burning out. Burnout is a noun, referring to the operation or result, whereas burn out is a verb, referring to the act of conducting a burnout.
