Fuel consumption

n. The amount of fuel that is removed through the fire process.

  • Discussion

Fuel consumption may be expressed as mass removed per unit area or as a percentage of the pre-burn fuel load. (NWCG 2005)

  • Units

If fuel consumption is expressed as mass per unit area, it has the same units as fuel load. Preferred units for fuel consumption are kg/m2 in technical reports and papers. Fire Management in the United States still uses the English units t/ac. See the following fuel consumption units conversion table for conversion factors.
