Horizontal movement rate

n. Rate of spread corrected to the horizontal.

  • Discussion

Fire behavior simulations that rely on Rothermel's (1972) surface fire spread model simulate rate of spread along the slope. Horizontal movement rate adjusts that value to the horizontal component as a function of slope steepness .

  • Units

Horizontal movement rate has the same units as rate of spread.

Preferred units for rate of spread are m/min in technical reports and papers. Fire Management in the United States still uses the English units ch/hr. See the following rate of spread units conversion table for conversion factors.
