Fuel model code

n. An alpha-numeric code referring to a fire behavior fuel model

  • Discussion

A fuel model code consists of two alhpa characters which specify a fuel type, followed by a number indicating a specific fire behavior fuel model within the fuel type. In the 2005 set (Scott and Burgan 2005), fire behavior fuel models are placed in order of increasing heat per unit area (HPA). For example, GR3 is the third model in the grass (GR) fuel type; it has the third lowest HPA of all the GR models.

For backwards compatibility, fuel model codes for the original 13 fuel models (Albini 1976, Anderson 1982) may not have alpha characters (as in BehavePlus), or may be indicated by "FB".
