Propagating flux ratio

n. The ratio of propagating flux to reaction intensity.

  • Discussion

Propagating flux ratio is a term in the Rothermel (1972) fire spread model representing the fraction of reaction intensity available for fire front propagation (propagating flux). In building the spread model, Rothermel used data from experimental wind-tunnel fires to estimate propagating flux ratio from packing ratio and characteristic surface-area-to-volume ratio.
