Slope factor

n. A dimensionless coefficient representing the effect of slope steepness on propagating flux in the Rothermel (1972) surface fire spread model.

  • Discussion

The Rothermel (1972) model first predicts no-wind no-slope spread rate, then adjusts that prediction to account for the effects of slope steepness and midflame wind speed. The effect of slope steepness is represented by slope factor, which a function of packing ratio and slope steepness.
