The term wildland-urban interface has many alternative "spellings", including urban-wildland interface, wildland/urban interface, and wildland-structural interface. All have the same meaning. The term wildland-urban interface is often shortened to just "urban interface", "the interface" or to its acronym "WUI" (say wooo eeee).

Some authors distinguish wildland-urban interface from wildland-urban intermix, reserving wildland-urban interface for linear separations of wildland and developed areas -- a true interface -- while using the term wildland-urban intermix for areas where structures (or other urban features) are intermixed within wildland fuels.

The term wildland-urban interface is used generically to refer to both interface and intermix.
