Wind gust

n. A period of high wind speed during which the instantaneous wind speed exceeds the 10-minute average wind speed by 10 knots (11.5 mi/h; 5 m/s).

The gustiness of wind refers to variability of wind speed (Crosby and Chandler 1966). This definition of a wind gust provides a quantitative threshold for identifying a wind gust and measuring gust wind speed. A wind gust usually lasts less than twenty seconds.
